Advantages of EDW
The cost of transporting sludge is a major component in the cost of running an STP. An increase in solids content from 15% to 40% will dramatically reduce the number of truckloads of sludge moved through city streets (see chart), reducing energy consumption and noise and greenhouse gas pollution.

Data from a typical Australian water utility shows that the savings in transport costs in Australia alone gained by increasing solids content from 18% to 40% will be about $7.8 million a year on 2007 sludge output, rising to almost $10.5 million in 2010.
